Seeking Classic Chocolate Icing Recipe for Yellow Cake – My Dad’s Favorite from Childhood!

I’m wondering if anyone has a personal old fashion chocolate icing that hardens with yellow cake recipe. My dad said that when he was little he always had that for his birthday or special occasions and I’d never heard of it bc I’m only 21

but I tried looking online with him and it still didn’t really give us what we were looking for so if anyone knows what I’m talking about and has a passed down recipe or their own recipe for this cake icing please let me know.
 
I always dumped some sugar, cocoa, butter, and milk in pan. Brought it to a boil till it made a soft ball in cold water. But I liked it better not cooked so long so it stayed gooey. Poke holes in the cake and pour it on. Do not forget to add vanilla. It is kind of like the mixture for no bake oatmeal cookies. Without the peanut butter everybody seems to use nowadays.
 
My Mother’s recipes. One makes more frosting ( 2 cups of sugar one). Very easy to make. Been using these for 60 years.

She said use a yellow butter batter cake mix to make the cake.
