Seeking Classic Chocolate Icing Recipe for Yellow Cake – My Dad’s Favorite from Childhood!

I have made this for years and everyone loves it.
One stick butter
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup milk
1/3 cup coco
1 tsp vanilla
Mix everything but the vanilla
Cook over low heat till it’s all melted
Then bring to a slow boil stirring constantly for 3 minutes. If the humidity is high it will need more time.
Then take off heat and add vanilla. Stir until thick then ice your cake.

@grace2u875, I made this recipe two days ago for my
Mother. She and some of her high school friends have rented a cabin in North Alabama for the weekend and this was their night time snack!

Heat up heavy whipping cream with some chocolate chips and mix well once it cools it gets thick like ganache

My mom's recipe: 2 cups sugar, 3 heaping tablespoons cocoa powder, dash of salt in cast iron skillet. Mix evaporated milk and water evenly to make 1/3 cup and stir in cocoa and sugar mixture. Cook on medium heat, stirring almost constantly until a drop of mixture dropped into a glass of water forms a ball in the water. Remove from heat and stir in 3 tablespoons butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring. Stir rapidly bc it will harden quickly. Pour over cake and let it set. My mom would make holes in the cake with a fork so some of the icing would soak into the cake. It was delicious. One thing, my mom never made this icing when it was raining. She said it would never set.

I think this is what you’re talking about.
Buttery Fudge Icing
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups granulated sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
⅔ cup whole milk
1 stick butter, cut into pieces (use real butter)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine cocoa powder and sugar in a medium saucepan.
Add corn syrup and milk to the saucepan and mix until well blended.
Heat over medium-high heat until boiling.
Cook for about 12 minutes, stirring constantly.
Continue cooking until the mixture forms a medium-hard ball when tested in cold water.
Pour mixture into a mixing bowl.
Add butter and vanilla.
Beat at high speed with a mixer until satiny.

I like to use Hershey chocolate bars. As soon as the cake comes out of the oven I lay chocolate bars on it. When they have melted I spread them over the cake like frosting. When it cools, it hardens.

My mom used to make the boiled chocolate frosting… that would get kinda hard… don’t remember how she made it…

My mom used to make icing that harden and you could break some off from the cake and it tasted like fudge. She made it with the old fashioned Hersheys coca powder. The recipe may still be on the container if you check
