Steamed/boiled cabbage (put some sugar in the water it really enhances flavor) and jasmine rice with shredded cheddar cheese is one of my favorites. Otherwise cooked cabbage with sauce (red sauce) is really good too.
My husband likes cabbage and beef empanadas wish I knew how to make them for him. He hasn’t had them since his mom passed and lately he can’t stop talking about them.
"Mexican Cabbage" - cook 1lb of ground beef (or ground turkey) with a diced up onion in it. Add package of taco seasoning. Add 3/4 cup water and 1/2 head shredded cabbage. Cook cabbage for a few minutes (to get it hot but not mushy). Only 3 ingredients and I have this ALL the time!!
Fry onions, celery and cabbage in a frying pan. Fry than add a cup of water bring to a boil than add a pkg of Ichian Japanese style noodles. Turn down to simmer and cover . Stir a few times. Enjoy
Cabbage Au Gratin
Servings: yields 6 servings
Ingredients
2 medium heads cabbage, quartered with hearts removed
4 quarts boiling water
½ cup margarine
½ cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
12 slices American cheese
1 cup bread crumbs (Optional)
1 pinch salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
Steps
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Place cabbage in a large pot of boiling water. Cook until tender, drain and set aside.
Melt butter in a saucepan, then add flour stirring constantly. Gradually add 2 cups of milk. Stir on medium heat until thickened.
Layer cabbage in bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour 1/3 of white sauce over cabbage. Arrange six slices of cheese on that. Repeat, ending with white sauce.
Bake in an oven at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) oven for 45 minutes or until bubbly and browned. Let stand 5 minutes. Slice and enjoy.
Baked Cabbage Casserole
Ingredients
1 Small or ½ of a large cabbage
1 medium yellow or sweet onion
1 stick salted butter - melted
1 teaspoon of salt
½ to 1 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
1 (10 oz) can cream of chicken soup
½ cup of mayonnaise
1 sleeve of Ritz crackers - or some other buttery cracker
1 stick salted butter - melted
1 cup grated medium or sharp Cheddar cheese
Steps
Preheat your oven to 350° F.
Coarsely chop your cabbage, and place in a 3-quart casserole dish.
Chop your onion (not diced). Place this on top of the cabbage in the dish.
Pour your melted butter over the top.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
In a separate small bowl, mix the cream chicken soup, and your mayonnaise. Spread this mixture on top of the cabbage mixture.
For the topping, crush the crackers but NOT fine. Mix the crushed crackers with the second stick of melted butter and grated cheese.
Spread this over the top of the casserole. NOTE: Use can use white cheddar cheese or yellow.
Bake of 45 minutes or until the top is browned and inside is bubbly.
Sprinkle a small amount of chopped Chives, or Green Scallions on top.
Try usng 1/2 lb pork to 1 lb beef. Saute onions. Add salt, pepper, and paprika. Use big bottles of V-8 juice for more flavor. Add strips of uncooked bacon on top for more flavor- throw out when done. Long grain partial boiled rice is good or raw works
